Egyptian Fayoumi

  • Originating southwest of Cairo and west of the Nile, the Fayoumi came to the United States sometime in the 1940’s. The Fayoumi has a reputation as a good bird for hot climates as well as a good forager. Hens are quick to mature and can begin laying as early as 4 ½ months. They lay a small, off-white egg, so might not be the best choice if you’re looking for a production bird. As a backyard bird, however, this would be a great exotic breed to include in your flock. The hens are not subject to broodiness until later in their laying life, so if you were considering letting some of your eggs hatch, these girls will wait until they are nearing the end of their laying life to hatch their chicks.
